Case Study

Boiling River Microbes

In 2019, our founder, Rosa, created the interdisciplinary project MicroAmazon that explores the hidden universe of extreme microbes living in the Boiling River of the Peruvian Amazon. This work aims to discover new species, medicines and bioremediation tools, and to learn more about evolution of life in the jungle. This initiative started while completing her Ph.D. in the David Sherman Laboratory at the University of Michigan and was partially funded by National Geographic Society. Scientific publications and an open access bilingual educational website sharing the results from this investigation will be made available later in 2023. MicroAmazon inspired the creation and development of Amazon Research Internacional.

MicroAmazon has been featured in Science Friday, National Geographic, American Society of Pharmacognosy, El Comercio, Andina, and more.
